Tenistja amerikane, edhe pse në moshën 34-vjeçare, fitoi në dy sete 6-2 dhe 6-3 për të parakaluar Roger Federerin në listën e përgjithshme të fitoreve në turnetë madhorë të tenisit.
Ajo ka siguruar kualifikimin për në çerekfinale, ku do të përballet me rumunen Simona Halep, e cila mposhti spanjollen Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-2 dhe 7-5.
“Është një arritje e madhe”, tha Williams pas rekordit të saj prej 308 fitoresh. “Madje është shumë domethënës. Realisht kisha menduar se nuk do të luaja më, por tashmë nuk e di se kur do të ndalem. Jam thjesht duke shijuar këto momente, duke thyer rekorde, të cilat as nuk e dija se ekzistonin, e jo më të mendoja se ishin të mundshme për t’u arritur”.
Halep ka humbur 7 ndeshje në 8 përballje ndaj Williamsit, por ende shpreson se do të mund të ushtrojë të paktën presion ndaj amerikanes në çerekfinale.
