Gjermania është kampionia e re olimpike në futboll për femra. Pikërisht në stadiumin mitik Maracana, aty ku dy vite më parë Pancerat të drejtuar nga Joakim Low u shpallën kampionë të botë, vajaat gjermane fituan medaljen e artë, e para në historinë e Lojërave Olimpikë në futbollin e femrave. Këtë herë Suedia nuk mundi ta dërgonte ndeshjen në shtesë, si ndodhi me SHBA-të e më pas me Brazilin për të synuar triumfin pas penalltive.
Tre minuta brenda pjesës së dytë Gjermania kaloi në epërsi me golin e Dzsenifer Marozsan, që devijoi drejt rrjetës pas shpinës së portieres suedeze një krosim të Leupolz.
Në minutën e 62-të pas një goditjeje dënimi nga Marozsan, topi i kthyer nga shtylla i devijua drejt portës nga Sembrant në tentim për të larguar rrezikun.
Një autogol klasik, që nuk i demoralizoi vazjat e Suedisë, që arritën ta ngushtonin rezultatin në 2-1 me Blachstenius 5 minuta më vonë. Në minutat e fundit Schough pati mundësitë për të barazuar rezultatin, por mbrojtja gjermane arriti ta shmangte rrezikun.
Pas tre medaljeve radhazi brozni të fituara në 2000, 2004 dhe 2008, Gjermania më në fund arrin të bëjë të sajën medaljen e artë. Sukses i rëndësishëm edhe për Suedinë, që merr medaljen e parë të argjendtë në lojërat olimpike në futboll për femra.
