Vajzat amerikane fituan për herë të 6-shtë rradhazi dhe për herë të 8-të në histori medaljen e Artë në Lojrat Olimpike pasi mposhtën në finalen e Olimpiadës së Rios, Spanjën me rezultatin e thëllë 101-72. Vetëm në periodën e parë rezistoi disi Spanja sepse më pas ritmin mbi parket e diktuan vetëm Shtetet e Bashkuara të Amerikës. Skuadra e trajnerit Geno Auriemma u mbështetet fuqishëm te loja e dy basketbollistëve të saj më të mira, Lindsay Whalen dhe Diana Taurasi. E para realizoi 17 pikë 6 asiste dhe 2 rebound ndërsa Taurasi u mjaftua me 17 pikë, 3 asiste dhe 3 rebound.
Për të fituar një tjetër medalje të Artë në Lojrat Olimpike, vajzat amerikane krijuan prej 17 pikësh në fund të periodës së parë duke e zgjatur më pas në plot 29 pikë avantazhin në përfundim të 4 periodave.Një paraqitje mjaft të mirë bëri edhe Maya Moore që realizoi 14 pikë ndërsa Elena Delle Donne shtoi 10 pikë të tjera në suksesin e Shteteve të Bashkuara. Te Spanja ajo që spikati ishte e pëhershmja Alba Torrens e cila realizoi në total 18 duke rezultuar edhe pikëshënuesja më e mirë e sfidës. Nëse medalja e Argjendtë në basketboll për femra i takoi Spanjës në Rio medaljen e Bronzit e fitoi Serbia që mundi në finalen e vogël për vendin e 3-t Francën me rezultatin 70-63.
